Dr. Marek

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when the last salary review on St. Helena took place; and if the salary commissioners' recommendations were implemented in full.

Mr. Raison

A salaries commissioner visited St. Helena from 25 October to 7 December 1984. His main recommendations concerning the introduction of a new key scale for salaries and a salaries award have been implemented, the effective date being 1 January 1985. The St. Helena Government are following up the more detailed recommendations about the structure and conditions of service of the public sector.

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was the average increase in public sector pay as a result of the last general salary review on St. Helena.

The average increase in public sector pay as a result of the 1984 salaries review was 21.8 per cent.

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how frequently it is intended to conduct salary reviews on St. Helena in the future.

Future reviews of public service salaries will form part of the annual budgetary aid reviews.

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what were the effects of the last salary review on St. Helena on the uprating of social welfare benefits.

Mr. Raison

Social welfare benefits have increased by 15 per cent. with effect from 1 January 1985.
