Mr. Hancock

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many elderly residents there were in residential care homes between (a) 1 January and 28 April and (b) 29 April to the latest available date; and what information he has to how many have their fees paid by his Department, and how many are self-supporting.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the number of (a) statutory, (b) private and (c) voluntary residential care homes for the elderly and (d) the number of places in such homes in 1979 and each subsequent year in each social services authority.

Information on the numbers of statutory, voluntary and private homes for the elderly and disabled, and the number of places in such homes, as at 31 March 1984, the latest date for which information is available, is given in the table. Equivalent figures for each of the years 1979 to 1983 were given in my replies to the hon. Member for Burnley (Mr. Pike) on 2 March 1984, at columns386–90, to the hon. Member herself on 11 June 1984, at columns 378–82, and to my hon. Friend the Member for York (Mr. Gregory) on 15 June 1984 at columns 586–94.
