HC Deb 26 July 1985 vol 83 cc803-4W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will estimate the number of fishermen contributing to the redundancy fund in 1975, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1982 and 1983 and the minimum individual total of contributions in each year.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

I regret that this information is not available. It is only since April 1982 that any employee has contributed to the redundancy fund. The fund has for most of its existence been financed by an allocation from the secondary class 1 earnings-related contributions paid by employers in respect of employed earners. From April 1982 there has been an allocation from the employee's contribution. The amounts paid respectively by the employer and the employee are currently 0.15 per cent. and 0.25 per cent. of earnings. There are no figures which would enable contributions by fishermen to be analysed separately.

Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many fishermen have (a) been made redundant and (b) receive compensation for redundancy since 1 January 1982, by ports; and how many ex gratia payments have been made by his Department.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

No information is available on the number of fishermen made redundant or of redundancy payments made to fishermen separately, either in aggregate or by port, before July 1984. An ex gratia payment was made in one case in January 1985.

Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will publish the code of practice and instructions given to officials dealing with fisherman's redundancy cases in 1976, 1978, 1980, 1982 and 1984.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

There have not been instructions relating specifically to fishermen's redundancy cases.
