from time to time between their representatives for the exchange of information, knowledge and ideas about training in the hotel and catering industry.

Mr. Beggs

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will publish details of the involvement of the Northern Ireland catering industry training board in the youth training programme since this scheme was instituted; and what are the number of places targeted, those filled and the number who completed the course.

Dr. Boyson

The catering industry training board has been involved in the youth training programme by supporting employers and further education colleges in the provision of off-the-job training, education and work experience for young people.

In 1983–84, of the 85 targeted places 46 were filled. Ten young people completed their year's course, and 24 obtained catering industry jobs before completion.

In 1984–85, of the 92 targeted places 91 were filled. Fifty-three young people are still following their year's course, and 28 have already obtained catering industry jobs.

Mr. Beggs

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement outlining the involvement of the hotel and catering industry in the youth training programme.

Dr. Boyson

The hotel and catering industry makes a valuable contribution to the training of both 16 and 17-year-olds in Northern Ireland through its participation in the youth training programme which offers training for young people in the two years following the minimum school leaving age. Full-time training for 16-year-olds is delivered through partnerships of two or more providers, one of whom must be an employer, and hotel and catering firms participate in these full-time training partnerships. For 17-year-olds, the hotel and catering industry is involved with the provision of training in the programme through the YTP workscheme and the skill training scheme.

Information relating to numbers of employers in the hotel and catering industry involved in the youth training programme cannot be extracted except at disproportionate cost.

Mr. Beggs

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will publish details of the opportunities for hotel and catering studies at colleges of further education in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Scott

I understand that the courses in hotel and catering studies set out in the attached schedule will be available in further education colleges in Northern Ireland in the academic year 1985–86.
