asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he has considered the implications for the nuclear non-proliferation treaty of any British involvement in the strategic defence initiative; and if he will make a statement.

Our firm support for the strategic defence initiative research programme is fully consistent with out obligations under international agreements to which we are party, including the non-proliferation treaty (NPT). Our strong commitment to the NPT was stressed as recently as 15 July by my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister in her speech to the American Bar Association.
