Mr. Dobson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) whether control weaknesses have been found in all health authorities for which reports were issued following investigations by his Department audit staff in relation to the payment of private patient charges; and if the accounts of all such authorities have been qualified;

(2) whether control weaknesses have been found in all health authorities investigated by his Department's audit staff in relation to the payment of private patient charges; and if the accounts of all health authorities have been qualified;

(3) if he will list the health authorities for which reports have been issued following investigation by his Department's audit staff in relation to the payment of private patient charges.

We asked the statutory auditors to carry out a special review in May 1984 of the handling of private patient charges at 37 health authorities. The auditors identified material control weaknesses in, and, accordingly, issued reports in respect of, the 21 health authorities listed. The auditors did not qualify their certificates to the 1983–84 accounts of all of these authorities:

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the health authorities for which statutory auditors have issued reports of poor control over private patient income in their routine examination of accounts.

Following their routine examination of the accounts of health authorities for 1983–84 and for 1984–85 (which is not yet complete) statutory auditors have issued reports of poor control over private patient income at the following 13 health authorities:
