§ Mr. Hannamasked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) for each district health authority and for each regional health authority, what is the number of young people between the ages of 16 and 19 years living in long-stay mental handicap hospitals; and for each authority what is the number living in units of (a) 25 or more beds, (b) under 25 beds;
(2) for each district health authority and for each regional health authority what is the number of children 416W claims. All the estimates are subject to error, the individual breakdowns should therefore be treated as orders of magnitude only.
in long-stay mental handicap hospitals; and for each authority what is the number living in units of (a) 25 or more beds, (b) under 25 beds.
§ Mr. Ashleyasked the Secretary of State for Social Services, for each district health authority and each regional health authority, what is the number of children on short-term placements in long-stay mental handicap hospitals; and for each authority what is the number in units of (a) 25 or more beds and (b) under 25 beds.
§ Mr. John Patten[pursuant to his reply, 9 July 1985, c. 374]: The table shows numbers of children and young people in mental handicap hospitals and units at 31 December 1983. They include those in small National Health Service units in the community, and those in slightly larger specialist local units for children and young people. The figures also include children and young people admitted for a few weeks, or an even shorter period, for short-term care or assessment; and those who spend part of their time at home and part in National Health Service care. Separate figures are not available centrally for these separate categories.
The table gives numbers of young people aged 16–18 which are the nearest available figures to the 16–19 age range requested. The Department's annual publication "Inpatient statistics from the mental health enquiry for England", copies of which are in the Library, does include national figures for residents by age and certain durations of stay.
