HC Deb 22 July 1985 vol 83 c413W
Mr. Tony Lloyd

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the practice of his Department in advising claimants concerning the purchase of secondhand gas cookers when providing single payments to them.

Mr. Whitney

Claimants are advised in accordance with paragraphs 7214–7215 of the S manual, a copy of which is in the Library. They are normally told the level of expenditure considered reasonable and asked to produce a supplier's estimate of the cost of the item they have located. They are also advised to obtain an appliance that has been checked and to have it installed by a suitably qualified person (for example, the gas board or an installer registered with the Confederation for Registration of Gas Installers).
