HC Deb 22 July 1985 vol 83 c385W
Mr. Simon Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether Her Majesty's Government have invited, or intend to invite, further Chilean Government officials to visit the United Kingdom.

Mr. Renton

We have normal diplomatic relations with Chile. It follows that we should have regular contacts with Chilean officials.

Mr. Simon Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what action Her Majesty's Government intend to take regarding the case of Pedro Fernandez Lembach now that the Chilean authorities have said that they will not consider an application for his sentence to be commuted to one of exile.

Mr. Renton

As he is a Chilean national we have no formal standing to intervene on Sr. Lembach's behalf with the Chilean authorities, but Her Majesty's ambassador will continue to remind them of our willingness to grant Sr. Fernandez Lembach a visa to enter the United Kingdom in the event that they should decide to commute his sentence to one of exile.
