HC Deb 22 July 1985 vol 83 cc399-400W
Mr. Proctor

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) if he will give the estimate of the number of live births to mothers of New Commonwealth and Pakistani descent who themselves were born in the United Kingdom for 1983 or for the latest available date; and if he will make a statement.

(2) if he will estimate for 1981, 1982 and 1983 the number of births to mothers of New Commonwealth and Pakistani ethnic origin, excluding those of mixed descent who themselves were born in the United Kingdom.

Mr. John Patten

This information is not available from the data collected at birth registration. However, preliminary estimates based on results derived from the 1983 labour force survey suggest that, during the period mid-1980 to mid-1983, between 4,000 and 5,000 children were born in the United Kingdom each year to mothers of New Commonwealth and Pakistani descent who themselves had been born in the United Kingdom.
