asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make it his policy to publish the interim report of the Widdicombe committee before the House rises for the summer adjournment.

The Widdicombe inquiry is expected to submit its interim report on local authorities' involvement in publicity and political campaigning by 31 July. Whether the subsequent publication of that report will precede the date on which the House rises for the summer adjournment is not a matter within my control, but it will certainly be published as soon as practicable.
