HC Deb 05 July 1985 vol 82 c289W
Mr. Willie W. Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the latest estimate of the capital expenditure needed to bring up to satisfactory standards the stock of psychiatric hospital buildings; and how soon he expects to achieve this target.

Mr. John MacKay

The survey of the hospital stock carried out in 1981 found that some £200 million required to be spent over about 10 years to bring the stock up to standard, of which £27 million was attributable to self-contained psychiatric hospitals.

Over the past three years I have made special allocations of £55 million to health boards for upgrading work. It is for boards themselves to decide on the priorities for the use of this money, and the extent to which they wish to use their normal allocations for this purpose.
