There are 286 business counsellors under contract to the Department of Trade and Industry's small firms service.

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what studies he makes of the relative performance of the small firms sector in other countries.

My Department regularly monitors the policies of other countries in respect of small firms. Indeed, I am visiting the United States in two weeks' time and I will take the opportunity to discuss the United States approach to a wide range of small business issues.
