HC Deb 01 July 1985 vol 82 c72W
23. Mr. Cartwright

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what evidence he has of increased traffic congestion on trunk roads in the London area over the last five years; and what measures he is considering to reduce such congestion.

Mrs. Chalker

Congestion is self evidently worse during peak hours and in central London and town centre areas.

Data collected on the Departmental's roads in connection with specific schemes shows a continuing slow increase in congestion over the last five years, although the M25 has already had beneficial effects in certain areas.

Implementation of the schemes already in the London trunk road programme will deal with most of the remaining trouble spots.
