§ Mr. Meacherasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will set out the total gross expenditure, current and capital, on the National Health Service in England for each year since 1971–72 for (a) hospital and community health services, (b) family practitioner committees and their predecessors and (c) centrally funded services with the percentage increase in real terms (gross domestic product deflator), percentage increase deflated by the retail prices index and percentage increase deflated by movements in National Health Service pay and prices.
§ Mr. Kenneth ClarkeThe tables set out total gross expenditure (current and capital) in the National Health Service in England for each year since 1971–72. Percentage changes in real terms are measured by the gross domestic product deflator. As the hon. Member has specifically asked for the figures to be deflated by the retail price index, and by National Health Service pay and prices, they are also given, but I do not accept that these figures are sensible measures of expenditure in real terms.
