§ 48. Mr. Bowen Wellsasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will make a statement on the famine in Africa and how it is being alleviated by British, European and international agencies supported by the United Kingdom.
§ Mr. RaisonThe famine in Africa continues to be very serious, especially in Ethiopia and the Sudan. Substantial progress in the provision of food has been made, but port-discharge, transport and distribution problems persist in several countries. The United Nations office for emergency operations in Africa is making a concerted effort to overcome those problems. We continue to make a significant contribution from the £60 million of emergency assistance I announced in Geneva in March.
