HC Deb 28 January 1985 vol 72 cc36-7W
Mr. Sayeed

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what steps he is taking to ensure that secondary school pupils and their parents are informed about the introduction of the General Certificate of Secondary Education examination.

Sir Keith Joseph

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales and I have arranged for an explanatory leaflet about the new general certificate of secondary education (GCSE) examination to be distributed to all secondary school pupils and their parents in England and Wales. The leaflet is being distributed to employers' organisations and other interested parties as well. Copies have been placed in the Library.

We plan to publish a "general introduction" to the GCSE, designed for teachers and others professionally concerned with examinations, shortly. We are also considering how best to make fuller information available in due course to employers and others.
