§ Mr. Peter Bruinvelsasked the Secretary of State for Social Services, pursuant to his answer to the hon. Member for Leicester, East on 17 January, if he will immediately issue guidelines to all health authorities concerning the handling of cases involving surrogate motherhood; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Kenneth ClarkeI am aware of my hon. Friend's concern about surrogate motherhood, but I have nothing to add to the answer to which he refers. Unless the expectant mother drew the attention of the hospital to the precise circumstances of her pregnancy, a health authority could have considerable difficulty in distinguishing between surrogate mothers and any other expectant mothers.
