HC Deb 21 January 1985 vol 71 c309W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs why Her Majesty's Government are opposed to the acquisition of nuclear weapons by other states.

Mr. Luce

As one of the original parties to the non-proliferation treaty and a depositary power, we support the view expressed in the preamble to that treaty thatthe proliferation of nuclear weapons would seriously enhance the danger of nuclear war. In particular, we believe that the introduction of nuclear weapons into areas where they do not form part of the existing security arrangements could destabilise such regions and threaten global security.
