HC Deb 14 January 1985 vol 71 cc61-2W
Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what representations he has received to date concerning his decision to appeal to the House of Lords in the Gillick case.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

To date we have received letters from three hon. Members and 11 members of the public

Prices Index of 81.1 per cent, over the same period, and an increase in the Transport and Vehicles Group Index (which covers motoring costs, petrol and oil, motor insurance, fares and rail transport) of 82.8 per cent. We have also made the allowance more effective by taking it out of income tax, by extending VAT relief and introducing car tax relief in respect of motor vehicles designed or adapted for disabled people, and by removing VAT on cars provided under the Motability scheme. I hope that this explanation shows that, on the broader comparisons which I have outlined, mobility allowance, far from losing its value, has been increased significantly in real terms under this Government. I cannot, as you will appreciate, anticipate decisions on the amount of the up-rating next November.

opposing our decision to appeal to the House of Lords and from two hon. Members and four members of the public in support of our decision.
