asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list the research projects on acquired immune deficiency syndrome that the Government are supporting; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Brooke

The Medical Research Council, which receives its grant-in-aid through the Department, is at present supporting the following research programmes on AIDS through its project grants scheme:

  1. (a) Professor M. W. Adler and Dr. R. S. Tedder (Middlesex hospital medical school, London): An investigation into the immunology and aetiology of AIDS;
  2. (b) Dr. J. Craske (PHLS, Withington hospital, Manchester): An epidemiological study of the relationship of AIDS in patients with disorders of blood coagulation to its possible acquisition through treatment with blood products;
  3. (c) Dr. D. J. Jeffries (St. Mary's hospital medical school, London) and Dr. D. Taylor Robinson, (clinical research centre, Harrow): Virological investigations of patients with AIDS;
  4. (d) Dr. A. Pinching (St. Mary's hospital medical school, London): A study on the killing of intracellular pathogens by macrophages derived from homosexual males with AIDS and related disorders;
  5. (e) Professor R. Weiss (Institute of cancer research, London): Retroviruses associated with AIDS.
