HC Deb 09 January 1985 vol 70 cc498-9W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of Slate for Social Services how many cases of failed sterilisation operations have occurred during the last three years; and what levels of compensation were paid out to patients involved as a result.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

We do not collect this information centrally.

Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps he intends to take to assess the number of failed sterilisation operations performed on women; and what guidelines he will issue to health authorities as a result.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

We have no plans to introduce the central collection of statistics on the number of failed sterilisations nor to issue guidance to health authorities. The success rate of the operation is taken into account by doctors when they explain the procedure to their patients and obtain consent.
