HC Deb 09 January 1985 vol 70 cc436-7W
Mr. Alan Howarth

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many of Her Majesty's Inspectorate since 1979 have been appointed as a result of open advertising and how many as a result of direct approaches to individual recruits.

Sir Keith Joseph

All Her Majesty's inspectors are recruited through open competitions overseen by the Civil Service Commission. They are subsequently formally appointed by Her Majesty in Council, and all are required to complete satisfactorily a period of probation. Two hundred and eight inspectors have been so appointed since 1 January 1979.

Mr. Alan Howarth

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if any individual members of Her Majesty's Inspectorate specialise in multicultural education; and if he will make a statement.

Sir Keith Joseph

Twenty-six members of Her Majesty's Inspectorate in England have specialist concerns in relation to multiracial education which occupy significant proportions of their time. Other inspectors are also involved in multiracial education matters from time to time.
