Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Defence why his Department have shelved plans to bring into service an additional 10 Buccaneer strike aircraft.

Mr. Butler

It is planned to maintain two squadrons of Buccaneers in the maritime strike/attack role. It is long standing policy not to disclose the aircraft strengths of front line units.

Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether he has any plans for a Buccaneer replacement for the mid-1990s or beyond.

Mr. Butler

There are no plans for a new aircraft design to replace the Buccaneer.

Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how long the Buccaneer aircraft will remain in service in the maritime attack role.

Mr. Stanley

They are planned to remain in service into the mid 1990s.
