Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what sums were paid by the intervention board for agricultural produce or any other public authority in 1984 to support the growing of rape seed; and if he will provide separate figures for storage, storage aid, export subsidies and so on, together with a comparison for 1970 and 1979.

Mr. MacGregor

Provisional expenditure figures for direct support for rape seed growing in 1984 are £64,068,550 for the production aid and £1,310 for export refunds. Comparable figures for 1979 were £20,049,352 and £441 respectively. No support buying was undertaken in 1984. In 1979 payments for purchases into intervention amounted to £292,387 and for storage to £5,162. No payments to support the growing of rapeseed were made in 1970.
