asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many employers were convicted of illegal child employment offences in 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1984.

Responsibility for the enforcement of legislation restricting the employment of children in industrial undertakings, such as factories, construction sites, mines and quarries etc., and in agriculture falls to the Health and Safety Executive. The numbers of employers prosecuted by HSE inspectors and convicted for illegal child employment offences are:
