asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the number of staff-in-post in central Government Departments at 1 January.

At 1 January 1985 there were 619,570 staff-in-post — 503,253 non-industrial and 116,317 industrial. The number of civil servants has fallen by 112,705 or 15.4 per cent. since the beginning of the last Parliament.
