Mr. Gould

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what was the United Kingdom's crude trade balance in yarns, fabrics and garments, respectively, in the years from 1979 to 1984.

[pursuant to the reply, 26 February 1985, c. 115]: Neither the United Kingdom nor any other Member State of the Community made use of the anti-surge mechanism during 1983 and 1984.

Mr. Gould

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry in which multi-fibre arrangement group I product categories, the individual quotas to the United Kingdom for Macao, Taiwan and South Korea, respectively, exceeded 1 per cent. of total United Kingdom imports of the product concerned in 1980.

The anti-surge provision is applicable only when a member state's quota represents 1 per cent. (dominant suppliers) or 2.5 per cent. (non-dominant suppliers) of total EC (not United Kingdom) imports of that product in 1980.

[pursuant to the reply, 26 February 1985, c. 115]: The voluntary restraint arrangements on textile and clothing products which the EC has with Portugal and Spain are informal arrangements, the details of which are not published.
