HC Deb 26 February 1985 vol 74 cc119-20W
Mr. David Marshall

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is the current total length of central safety barriers installed on motorways, trunk roads and other roads in the United Kingdom.

Mrs. Chalker

The total length of central reserve safety fencing installed on motorways in England is 1,440 miles. On trunk roads in England it is approximately 220 miles. Trunk roads and motorways in Scotland and Wales are the responsibility of my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Scotland and for Wales. I have no detailed knowledge of the provision of safety fences on other roads which are dealt with by the local highway authorities.

Mr. David Marshall

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what are the parameters for the design of road safety crash barriers.

Mrs. Chalker

Safety fences are designed to contain and safely re-direct vehicles weighing 1.5 tonnes travelling at 70 mph impacting at an angle of 20 degrees.
