asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the diseases which are required to be notified to his Department; what information his Department seeks concerning the persons concerned in order to identify sectors of the population at risk; and if he will make a statement.

The following diseases are notifiable in England and Wales:

  • Acute encephalitis
  • Acute meningitis
  • Acute poliomyelitis
  • Anthrax
  • Cholera
  • Diphtheria
  • Dysentery
  • Food poisoning
  • Infective jaundice
  • Lassa fever
  • Leprosy
  • Leptospirosis
  • Malaria
  • Marburgh disease
  • Measles
  • Ophthalmia neonatorum
  • Paratyphoid fever
  • Plague
  • Rabies
  • Relapsing fever
  • Scarlet fever
  • Smallpox
  • Tetanus
  • Tuberculosis
  • Typhoid fever
  • Typhus fever
  • Viral haemorrhagic fever
  • Whooping cough
  • Yellow fever

Medical officers for environmental health are required to submit returns of notifications in their areas to the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys, with the age and sex of the patients concerned.
