HC Deb 26 February 1985 vol 74 c87W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what assessment his Department has made of the damage to the eastern lane of the M4 caused by heavy lorries carrying coal and iron ore to Llanwern since 6 March 1984; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Stradling Thomas

Evidence of a deterioration in the state of the carriageway pavements along the M4 affected by the lorry convoys between Port Talbot and Llanwern was discerned before this additional traffic occurred. Any increase in traffic, particularly heavy goods vehicles, reduces the life of the carriageway pavement but it is not possible to isolate the effect of any particular group of vehicles.
