HC Deb 26 February 1985 vol 74 cc144-5W
Sir Dudley Smith

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will now consider changing the appearance and size of the £1 coin to make it more acceptable to the elderly.

Mr. Ian Stewart

There are no plans to alter the dimensions of the £1 coin, which were the subject of extensive research prior to the introduction of the coin, and of consultations with organisations representing amongst others the elderly.

So far as design is concerned, a Scottish version of the coin, bearing a different type on the reverse, was issued in 1984, and a Welsh version will be issued this April. Northern Irish and English versions will also be issued in subsequent years.
