HC Deb 26 February 1985 vol 74 c111W
Mr. Jackson

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry who represents the United Kingdom on the International Telecommunications Union; and what information he has about forthcoming meetings of that body.

Mr. Butcher

The Department of Trade and Industry represents the United Kingdom at all major meetings of the International Telecommunication Union, including the plenipotentiary conference, the administrative council, administrative radio conferences, the plenary assembly of the International Radio Consultative Committee and, generally, the plenary assembly of the International Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee. Further information on the arrangements for United Kingdom representation at the ITU and other international telecommunication organisations is contained in a paper on this subject placed in the Library of the House on 26 July 1984.

ITU meetings scheduled for 1985 include the administrative council in July and a world administrative radio conference in August. Meetings of CCIR and CCITT study groups take place regularly throughout the year.

In addition, I understand that the recent report of the Independent Commission for World-Wide Telecommunications Development is likely to be discussed at the administrative council in July and possibly at other meetings to be arranged for that purpose.
