asked the Secretary of State for Social Services to what factors he attributes the reduction in the number of people taking post-qualifying courses for social work with deaf people between 1979 and 1983, given in his answer of 23 January, Official Report, columns 463–4.

The numbers of people taking these courses have never been high; it has long been difficult to find social workers wishing to specialise in this way. The Department is in touch with the relevant professional bodies with a view to improving the situation.
