HC Deb 25 February 1985 vol 74 cc45-6W
15. Mr. Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what representations he has received from Leicester city council concerning the recently published Transport Bill.

Mr. David Mitchell

I have received a written representation from Leicester city council about the White Paper "Buses" and a response to my Department's consultation paper on the structure of district council bus operations.

16. Mr. Caborn

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what improvement in off-peak bus services he expects as a result of the Transport Bill becoming law.

Mr. David Mitchell

Many off peak services are profitable or potentially profitable and on those I expect deregulation to lead to better services and lower fares Where the market does not provide services without subsidy, competitive tendering by local authorities will achieve better value for money.

36. Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what representations he has received from organisations representing bus users in rural areas following the publication of the Transport Bill.

Mr. Michael Spicer

I have received over 8,000 representations since the publication of the White Paper last July. A substantial proportion of the responses have been from representative bodies and individuals in rural areas.
