Mr. Soley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons were served with notice of intention to deport during 1984; and how many of these were at the same time served with detention orders.

Mr. Waddington

The currently available information relates to the first nine months of 1984, when 1,846 notices of intention to deport were served. The total number of person served with detention orders in the same period was published in table 13 of the quarterly Home Office statistical Bulletin "Control of Immigration:

Statistics — Third Quarter, 1984" (Issue 27/84); such orders are almost always served at the same time as a notice of intention to deport.

Mr. Soley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons were recommended for deportation with no custodial sentence during 1984, and, of those, in how many cases the court directed release (a) subject to conditions and (b) without conditions.

Mr. Waddington

The currently available information relates to the first nine months of 1984, when of the total of 303 such persons, the courts directed release of 87 subject to conditions and of 137 without conditions.
