HC Deb 22 February 1985 vol 73 cc603-4W
Mr. Freeman

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what proportion of Her Majesty's Government's aid to Ethiopia in the last 12 months was redirected from other programmes.

Mr. Renton

None. Our aid to Ethiopia of around £29 million during the last 12 months has come from allocations already agreed for food aid, disaster relief of other specific purposes, from a reserve set aside for contingencies and from unavoidable slippage elsewhere in the aid programme. The Ministry of Defence has provided a substantial contribution by sending a Hercules detachment to assist in the distribution of relief supplies and this has naturally had some effect on its other flying activities.
