HC Deb 22 February 1985 vol 73 cc620-1W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department in how many cases since 1975 disciplinary action has been taken against a doctor for failing to notify an addict or suspected addict to the Chief Medical Officer of his Department.

Mr. Mellor

Under the provisions of section 13(1) of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, and on the recommendation of a tribunal, a direction may be made against a medical practitioner who fails to notify cases of addiction, prohibiting him from prescribing controlled drugs. From 1975 to date, no directions have been made solely in respect of failure to notify, but in this period nine doctors have been referred to tribunals in cases where failure to notify formed part of the allegation. This resulted in five directions being made.
