§ 19. Mr. Thurnhamasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list the common services in his Department contracted out to private contractors.
§ Sir Keith JosephThe list is as follows:
- Most office and window cleaning
- Laundry
415 - Maintenance of vehicles
- Maintenance of computers and office machinery
- Maintenance of buildings for which my Department is responsible
- Out-of-hours security in the Darlington office
- The staff restaurant in the Darlington office
- Some provision of hospitality (buffet, lunches, etc.)
- Provision of typists, by private agencies
- Provision of telephonists for the Department's main office
- Periodic use of management consultants
- Computer bureaux and consultancy services
- Some external training
- Some graphic design work
- Some work on video production
- Some use of private carriers for the transit of material
In addition, the Department purchases services from other Government Departments (such as Her Majesty's Stationery Office, the Property Services Agency, and the Central Office of Information) which those Departments in turn often contract out to the private sector.
