§ Dr. McDonaldasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will estimate the size of the European market for microchips in 1984; and if he will estimate the percentage of that market supplied by (a) United Kingdom producers, (b) other European producers, (c) Japan and (d) the United States of America.
§ Mr. ButcherThe 1984 European market for semiconductor devices is estimated at around $4.7 billion. About 35 per cent. of this market was met by the European production and of this the United Kingdom contributed 10 per cent. The remainder came from Japanese (10 per cent.) and United States (55 per cent.) sources.
§ Dr. McDonaldasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how much of the United Kingdom market for microchips was supplied by domestic production in 1984.
§ Mr. ButcherFigures for the whole of 1984 are not available. For the first three quarters of the year domestic suppliers provided 35 per cent. by value of the estimated home market.
