§ Sir George YoungMr. Edward Berman was appointed as a special adviser to the then Secretary of State for the Environment on inner city matters, with particular reference to the role of voluntary organisations. His appointment was for nine months from 4 October 1982 to426W 4 July 1983, on the basis of two-thirds time, to be averaged over the period of the appointment. This was later revised and for the period 1 April to 4 July the appointment was on a full time basis. His salary was based on the mid-point of the assistant secretary scale. The terms of Mr. German's appointment provided that, while he was required to withdraw from the paid employment of the Inter-Action Trust, he was permitted to work for it on a voluntary basis, and to undertake consultancy work in time not spent working for the Secretary of State.
