asked the Secretary of State for Defence why Mr. Seamus Mallon was questioned last week by the Ulster Defence Regiment; and if he will make a statement.

On 12 December Mr. Seamus Mallon was by a patrol of the Ulster Defence Regiment carrying out vehicle check point duties. The patrol carried out routine checks as empowered by the Northern Ireland (Emergency Provisions) Act 1978. Nothing untoward was found and Mr. Mallon was allowed to continue his journey.
