Mr. Sheerman

asked the Paymaster General what was the distribution of loans on the loan guarantee scheme by (a) amount loaned, (b) number of employees in the company and (c) turnover of the company to which money has been loaned for each year since the introduction of the scheme in 1981.

A. Loans covered by the loan guarantee scheme since its inception in 1981 broken down by size of loan

Notes:

(a) The maximum size of loan under the scheme has been £75,000 throughout the period.

(b) A business may obtain more than one loan (up to a cumulative maximum of £75,000). The figures given are for the number of loans.

B. Employment data are collected from time to time in sample surveys of firms receiving loans under the scheme. The following information is derived from the latest survey data on loans issued in the stated period

The following table shows the available information, which is also in the Library. Figures are given for the United Kingdom and the standard economic planning regions for November of each year since 1979. They are adjusted for discontinuities and relate to unemployed claimants, seasonally adjusted excluding school leavers. Unemployment rates are the number of unemployed expressed as a percentage of employees in employment plus the unemployed. Precise unemployment figures for social security regions are not available except at disproportionate cost.

(a) Part-time employees are counted as ½

(b) Data relates to loans in force and employment at the time of the survey.
