HC Deb 19 December 1985 vol 89 cc270-1W
Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will advise the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board to increase the awards made to victims of rape or serious sexual attack.

Mr. Mellor

It is the practice of the board to review from time to time the guidelines it uses on compensation in particular classes of case, having regard to the current level of damages awarded in civil proceedings and the terms of the criminal injuries compensation scheme. This is not a process in which my right hon. Friend would think it right to intervene.

Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will allocate more resources and manpower to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board.

Mr. Mellor

Financial provision for the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board in 1986–87 will allow for an increase in staff and in compensation.
