HC Deb 16 December 1985 vol 89 c49W

Mr. Blair asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list the hereditaments owned by the Crown but occupied by private sector organisations on behalf of the Crown for public purposes to which contributions in lieu of rates are payable by the Treasury in accordance with sections 37 and 38 of the General Rate Act 1967 or under parallel provisions of the Scottish Valuation Acts.

Mr. MacGregor

Those contributions in lieu of rates made centrally by Her Majesty's Treasury are on property deemed to be occupied by the Crown for public purposes. Estate holding departments are responsible for any arrangements reached with private sector organisations acting on their behalf and where the private sector occupation is for that public purpose the rating position remains unchanged.

No comprehensive list of such occupations is kept by Her Majesty's Treasury and I regret that this information cannot be collated without a disproportionate expenditure of time and resources.
