HC Deb 12 December 1985 vol 88 cc706-7W
Mr. Ron Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what he expects to be the average student-academic staff ratio for the university sector.

Mr. Chris Patten

In December 1983, the latest year for which information is available, the student-staff ratio in universities in Great Britain was 10.2. This ratio is defined as the full-time equivalent of undergraduate and postgraduate students divided by full-time academic staff funded wholly from university funds.

Academic staff student ratios for future years will depend on individual universities decisions on staffing levels within the resources available to them.
