§ Mr. Rostasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what information he has on research being undertaken into the use of lead for safe isolation and disposal of high level radioactive waste.
§ Mrs. RumboldResearch is being undertaken into the suitability of lead as an infilling material in containers for heat-generating wastes or spent fuel in the European Community programme of research and in Sweden. The UK is kept informed of the results, but we are undertaking no research of our own since it is policy to store such radioactive waste for at least fifty years prior to disposal.
