§ Mr. MellorAccording to the records held centrally, on 30 September 1985 there were about 690 persons aged under 18 in detention centres, about 1,140 in closed youth custody centres and 280 in open youth custody centres. In addition, about 250 youth custody trainees aged under 18 were being held in prisons and remand centres. The estimated average weekly cost per inmate for 1984–85 was £334 for detention centres, £260 for closed youth custody centres and £294 for open youth custody centres.
