HL Deb 10 December 1985 vol 469 c198WA
Lord Wedderburn of Charlton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many of the 317,143 persons in training under the youth training scheme on 30th September 1985 (or of those in training on such date for which figures are most recently available) entered as school leavers from (i) independent schools or (ii) other schools, or from further education or from employment; and how many in category (ii) were school-leavers from (a) comprehensive schools and (b) grammar schools.

The Secretary of State for Employment (Lord Young of Graffham)

I regret that the information requested is not currently available. However some of the information is being gathered in studies in England and Wales which have been commissioned jointly by the Manpower Services Commission, the Department of Employment and the Department of Education and Science. Among the topics to be covered, the studies will seek information on the activities prior to entry in the youth training scheme of representative national samples of young people reaching minimum school-leaving age during the 1983–84 academic year. A similar separate study is being carried out in Scotland. Preliminary results, covering the experience of this cohort up to the spring of 1985, are expected to become available early in 1986.
