HC Deb 10 December 1985 vol 88 c579W
Mr. Golding

asked the Paymaster General what representations he has received from the Confederation of British Industry in respect of shortages of skill; what has been his response; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Trippier

My ministerial colleagues and I are in regular contact with the Confederation of British Industry about a wide range of issues. We have not received any direct representations from the confederation specifically in respect of skill shortages. However, in December 1984 the CBI conducted, on behalf of the Manpower Services Commission, a special survey of skill shortages to determine the effects on output and investment and to identify the occupations affected. The survey is to be repeated this month and we look forward to continued co-operation in this important area.

The commission's adult training programmes are now much more closely directed towards responding to local labour market needs; but the primary responsibility for training must rest with employers.
